What is AI metadata in an image?
AI metadata is information encoded in an image file that describes how the file was generated, edited, or retouched by an artificial intelligence system. Unlike classic EXIF (camera, lens, date), AI provenance metadata documents the genesis of the visual — the model used, the prompt, the creator tool, and the generation timestamp.
The most common standards are C2PA / Content Credentials (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity), XMP fields embedded by Adobe tools, and the generator-specific metadata from Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, or DALL·E. An AI-generated file can therefore carry, invisibly, a full creation history.

Why remove AI and EXIF metadata before publishing?
Three reasons drive stripping this data: privacy, brand consistency, and SEO readiness. A product photo exported from Photoshop or an AI generator can leak your city, your internal tool, or a "AI-generated" flag you do not want shown publicly.

Why this matters in 2026
Since 2 August 2026, the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) Article 50 makes machine-readable provenance marking of synthetic images enforceable across the EU, with fines up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide turnover. At the same time, Google's "About this image" (in Images, Lens and Circle to Search) reads C2PA metadata and shows viewers whether a picture was made or edited with AI. That means every generated file you ship can now carry a permanent, searchable "AI" signal — unless you strip it. Remove the manifest to publish a clean, neutral asset on your own terms.
How metadata management helps search ranking (SEO)

Can an image contain both EXIF and AI metadata?+
Yes. An image generated then retouched in Photoshop carries both software EXIF, AI provenance XMP (C2PA), and possibly GPS. The remover handles all of them per the chosen scope.
Does removing metadata degrade the image?+
No. The operation removes ancillary data (headers, XMP, EXIF) without touching the pixels. Visual quality stays identical.
