How to Remove AI Metadata (C2PA) from ChatGPT Videos
Making Shorts, YouTube videos or UGC ads with ChatGPT's video generation (formerly Sora)? Here's what ChatGPT actually writes into your files, how to deliver a clean final video credited to you — and the disclosure rules that cleaning doesn't replace.
Updated September 25, 2026 · Removal tested on MP4 files carrying C2PA

Quick answer
To remove AI metadata from a ChatGPT video, upload the final export (MP4 or MOV) to Exif Injector's C2PA Video Remover and download the “_clean” copy. The C2PA manifest, XMP and container tags are removed without re-encoding. The visible watermark and OpenAI's internal detection aren't affected — and YouTube, TikTok and Meta's AI disclosure rules still apply.

What ChatGPT puts in your videos
OpenAI says it uses several provenance layers for its AI video, first launched as Sora and now generated in ChatGPT: C2PA metadata (Content Credentials) embedded in the file, a visible watermark on most exported videos, and internal detection tools. Only the first layer is metadata.

In an MP4 or MOV, the C2PA manifest lives in a dedicated “uuid” box in the container, next to the video and audio tracks. It records the tool used and that the content was AI-generated. Platforms that read C2PA can use it to show a label automatically.
What can be removed — and what can't

| Layer | Where it lives | Exif Injector |
|---|---|---|
| C2PA manifest (Content Credentials) | Dedicated “uuid” box inside the MP4/MOV container | ✓ Removed Removed — verified on an MP4 carrying a test C2PA manifest. |
| Container tags (title, encoder, dates, XMP) | MP4/QuickTime metadata atoms | ✓ Removed Removed without re-encoding video or audio. |
| Visible watermark | In the video pixels themselves | ✗ No Not touched. It isn't metadata, and removing it may breach OpenAI's terms. |
| OpenAI's internal detection | On OpenAI's side (image and audio search) | ✗ No Outside the file — no metadata tool affects it. |
The YouTube & UGC creator workflow
Every tool in your pipeline can add its own metadata. The golden rule: clean once, on the final file, right before upload.

- 1
Generate
Create your shots in ChatGPT (or Veo, Runway, Kling…). The exported file already carries the tool's provenance.
- 2
Edit
CapCut, Premiere or DaVinci often re-encode the video. Some apps add their own Content Credentials on export.
- 3
Clean the final export
Strip metadata from the final file, right before upload — not from the raw clips.
- 4
Credit & verify
Add title, author and copyright, then check the file with the C2PA Video Checker.
- 5
Publish with disclosure
Tick the AI-content disclosure whenever the platform requires it (realistic content, ads).
Remove ChatGPT video metadata step by step
In your browser, on desktop or mobile. Nothing to install.

- 1
Export the final version of your video
MP4 or MOV, editing finished. Keep the original: the tool creates a cleaned copy and never touches your source file.
- 2
Open the C2PA Video Remover
Drop one or more videos (up to 50, max 95 MB each). MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, M4V and more.
Open the video remover → - 3
Strip the metadata
The C2PA manifest, XMP and container tags are removed. Video and audio are not re-encoded, so there's no quality loss.
- 4
Download, credit, verify
One video downloads as “_clean”, several as a ZIP. Add your credits in the Video Metadata Editor, then verify the result.

YouTube, TikTok, Meta & UGC ads: the rules
Cleaning metadata doesn't change your obligations. Platforms combine metadata, creator disclosure and detection, and rules change fast. The essentials, to check against their current terms:

YouTube
You must disclose realistic altered or synthetic content at upload. YouTube may add the label itself if you don't.
TikTok
Requires the “AI-generated” label for realistic content and reads Content Credentials automatically.
Meta (Instagram, Facebook)
Shows “AI info” from industry signals (C2PA, IPTC) or your disclosure, and requires it for ads.
UGC ads
A fake testimonial or an AI “customer” presented as real can be a deceptive practice (e.g. the FTC's rules in the US). Brands often require clear disclosure.
Frequently asked questions

Do ChatGPT videos contain C2PA metadata?
According to OpenAI, content generated with its tools carries C2PA metadata (Content Credentials) stating it was AI-generated, and its videos (first with Sora, now in ChatGPT) have also shipped with a visible watermark. Check your own files with the C2PA Video Checker.
Does removing C2PA reduce video quality?
No. The manifest is a separate block in the container. Exif Injector removes it without re-encoding the video or audio.
Does the tool remove ChatGPT's visible watermark?
No. The visible watermark is part of the picture, not metadata. We don't touch it, and removing it may breach OpenAI's terms of use.
Will YouTube still know my video was made with AI?
Possibly. Removing metadata removes the label written in the file, not a visible watermark or any detection systems. And if your content is realistic, YouTube asks you to disclose it yourself.
Why clean metadata if I disclose AI anyway?
To deliver a clean final file: remove each tool's technical tags (generator, editor, timestamps), avoid an old manifest contradicting your actual edit, and add your own title, author and copyright.
Doesn't my video editor already remove C2PA?
Not necessarily. Some editors drop it when re-encoding, others keep it or add their own Content Credentials. Check your final export with the C2PA Video Checker.
Does this work for Veo, Runway or Kling too?
Yes for container metadata and C2PA manifests, whatever the generator. Watermarks embedded in the signal (like Google's SynthID) aren't metadata, though, and stay in place.
How large can my videos be?
Up to 95 MB per file and 50 files per batch. ChatGPT video clips of a few seconds to a minute fit comfortably within that limit.
