What are C2PA and Content Credentials?
C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is an open standard that attaches a provenance certificate to an image file. Content Credentials (Adobe) are the user-facing implementation of that standard — they record who created the image, with which tool, and whether AI was involved.
Concretely, a photo exported from Photoshop, Firefly, or an AI generator can carry a C2PA manifest in XMP stating "AI-generated", the model name, and a signed edit history. That manifest travels with the file — even after redistribution — until it is erased.

Why remove Content Credentials from an image?
Several cases justify erasing it: publishing a "native" image without a provenance label, avoiding a stale or incorrect certificate following the file, or simply slimming the file. Some regulations or platforms require the AI label; others prefer neutral publication. Our tool lets you choose.
Benefits of a neutral image
- No "AI" label visible to compatible viewers.
- No stale or inaccurate certificate pinned to the file.
- Lighter file without a bulky XMP manifest.
- You keep editorial control over the provenance note.
Keep in mind
- Erasing provenance may not suffice if a visible watermark exists.
- Some platforms re-attach their own certificate on upload.
- The AI label can be legally required by jurisdiction.
- Provenance proves authenticity — removing it hurts traceability.
Removing the C2PA manifest strips the provenance signaling, but not necessarily a visible watermark (e.g. SynthID). For full concealment, combine with re-encoding the image.
Why this matters in 2026
Since 2 August 2026, the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) Article 50 makes machine-readable provenance marking of synthetic images enforceable across the EU, with fines up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide turnover. At the same time, Google's "About this image" (in Images, Lens and Circle to Search) reads C2PA metadata and shows viewers whether a picture was made or edited with AI. If your file carries a C2PA manifest you no longer want attached — a stale certificate, an unwanted "AI" label, or a proof you'd rather keep private — strip it here in one step.
C2PA, SEO & AI-generated search (GEO)
Search engines read IPTC/XMP metadata, but C2PA certificates are primarily a trust layer for aggregators and editors. For classic image SEO, prefer a clean file (title, keywords, IPTC copyright) and good alt text. For GEO, a deliberately kept or erased provenance makes your content clearer to generative engines.

Are C2PA and Content Credentials the same thing?+

Does erasing C2PA hide that an image is AI-generated?+
It removes the provenance signaling, but not necessarily a visible watermark. For full concealment, re-encode the image after removal.
Does removal affect image quality?+

Should I keep provenance for SEO?+
