Content Credentials (C2PA, Adobe) are stored in the image's metadata — mostly in the XMP space. This image provenance checker reads the file's real tags and spots provenance-related fields: C2PA manifest, claim signature, an "AI-generated" assertion, ingredients and actions. Nothing is changed — it's a read-only analysis, useful before republishing a photo you received, a stock visual, or an image produced by an AI generator.

A file exported from Photoshop, Firefly, an AI generator or certain phones can embed a manifest in its XMP metadata. Compatible viewers (Adobe, Chrome's "About this image") then show a provenance icon. But many tools and social networks re-encode images on upload and wipe that layer — hence the value of checking the original file by file.

As of August 2, 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) makes machine-readable marking of synthetic content mandatory across the EU, with fines of up to €15 million or 3% of global turnover. Knowing whether an image already carries a certificate — and then deciding to keep or strip it — avoids unwanted labels.

A provenance certificate is not a ranking signal. For image SEO, prioritise a clean file with IPTC title, keywords and copyright, a descriptive filename, and relevant surrounding text. C2PA mostly helps editorial trust and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — check first, then decide whether the certificate should stay.
